When it comes to puzzle-solving games, they mostly serve entertainment purposes rather than story-telling. The creators of the game Manor Cafe (MOD Money) think otherwise, and this should be a promising title. Besides solving color blasting puzzles, you get to decorate a run-down coffee shop as well. The game is free to download on both the App Store and the Google Play Store.
There’s a storyline to base the game on
Unlike the majority of match-3 puzzle games out there, Manor Cafe (Mod Money) does have the plot to follow. This keeps it away from being a Candy Crush Saga spin-off. The game revolves around an old, poor-looking restaurant that you just accepted to become the new owner. Throughout your progress, you must decorate and upgrade the café to restore it back to the former glory. Work your way through levels to earn coins, which you can use to buy more accessories around the restaurant.
The gameplay isn’t so innovative, but it’s a job well done
It’s self-explanatory for a match-3 puzzle game. On a map of colorful blocks, you can remove a specific color in a pattern. The pattern needs to be at least 3 blocks long. Every round of Manor Cafe has a different list of goals, and you’ll have a limited number of moves.
Once a level is complete, you’ll be awarded stars. There’s a maximum of three, and the more stars you get, the more coins you’ll receive. They will be the critical thing to purchase furniture and upgrades for your café. Overall, the puzzles will range from the easiest to the most challenging, based on your level. I’d say they’re hard to solve, but not impossible to complete. For those who are new to the concept, the first few levels would consume more time than usual. However, I think you’re going to get the hang of it in no time.
As the levels get harder, though, sometimes you’ll run out of moves. That said, you should try to look at every board with a clear strategy. You can buy more lives with real money, but I don’t think that’s a good investment.
Decorating is on point, and it’s the most exciting feature of Manor Cafe
Anyway, it’s all up to you to select the kind of decorations you want. The game doesn’t set a milestone for furniture, and you can have a set of stuff for just a little investment. That’s if you want to go easy on upgrading. A better-decorated restaurant will eventually attract more customers and bring you more income.
The rooms of the café remain unchanged, but keep in mind to clear away any old items of furniture that the previous owners had left. A spacious restaurant is perfect to put in new stuff. When you start, you only have access to the first two basic rooms. There are more to discover in the back, including some luxurious dining room and a sea-view balcony! You’ll be stunned by the size of the café. In fact, I’d classify it as a high-end resort.
You can freely arrange things once you place them down, so there’s no need to worry about misplacing an item. What is more, some stunning decorations can be purchased with real money. I’m quite impressed with how they look, but I think you’ll be fine playing as a free user.
Build a menu for your restaurant
A good restaurant needs good food. As you level up, you’ll have options to add more dishes and drinks into your café’s menu. This also invites more people to come and relax at your place. Don’t forget to take a look at the beautiful graphics and character movement
You play the game from a 2.5D perspective. I’d say that’s the standard for any building simulator. As Manor Cafe focuses mainly on household decorations, the models of objects are handled with great care. Everything looks great, in my opinion, and they’re pretty realistic for a mobile game title. You can zoom in and out, and furniture looks great in every angle. The characters come in a cartoony style, and they look beautiful and suitable for Manor Cafe.
In match-3 puzzles, the tiles get the shapes directly from the appliances in the restaurant. They can be anything from fruits to candy packs. It gives the game a determined theme, which is a good-looking concept, too. The overall board is pretty similar to any other match-three puzzles, so there isn’t really an innovation here. Color blasts, though, feel fantastic to the eyes. It’s a treat to pop a massive combination of tiles.
Character movement may not be on par with the way everything else looks. The walking animation is not so stiff, but the characters tend to slide on their feet a lot. If anyone is expecting a game that resembles The Sims in terms of character animation, Manor Cafe may not live up the dream.
Micro-management is present in Manor Cafe
You won’t have to do everything alone. In fact, an excellent restaurant can’t work if there aren’t enough people to run it. Throughout your progress, some NPCs will be interested in helping you renovate the café. Hire as many as you can, and they’ll make sure that everything works like intended. Meg is your restaurant manager, and I’m keen on working with her. Sometimes she’ll tell you some advice with a thought bubble, so be sure to read every single one of them.
Soundtracks and sound effects are suitable for the game’s genre
The soundtrack is an upbeat and joyful tune. It’s a catchy one, and I’m really fond of it. It’s not the repetitive, boring track another game has. In Manor Cafe, sound artists surely did a great job in composing the music. In terms of sound effects, there isn’t much to say, to be honest. Sounds play when you interact with objects or NPCs. During puzzle-solving, sounds are acceptable, but they don’t bring much sensation compared to their visual counterparts.
The general performance is smooth
Manor Cafe is not a demanding application for your hardware. It can run effortlessly on any phone or tablets nowadays, and it’s an excellent job to optimize the game. Battery drainage is undoubtedly not a problem. The game, as I said earlier, doesn’t require much processing power, so it doesn’t put stress on your battery. What is more, you may play around four or five games a day. That shouldn’t set your phone on extreme heat. Advertisements on this game are non-intrusive. I’ve experienced smooth gameplay, and ads don’t slow the game down by any portion. They won’t interrupt you as well, so it’s a big bonus.
Does pay-to-win even exist in Manor Cafe?
Short answer, no. As the game is just for pure entertainment, there aren’t any clear goals of competing with each other. Manor Cafe doesn’t have a definite milestone anyway. While you can spend real money on in-game decorations, they are there just for the look of your restaurant. That doesn’t bring much difference when you’re playing the game for free. In match-three levels, when you’re out of moves but didn’t finish the round, you can buy more lives with money. That clears away any fun, though, so it’s better to plan according to every map with care.
We also bring you the latest Manor Cafe mod and you can install and enjoy it for free. The mod features allow you to use unlimited in-game money and more. So it will boost your gaming progress.
Some tips and tricks to maximize gameplay comfort
Try to match four or more color blocks
Like in any match-three puzzles, combining more than three blocks, you give you an empowered one. When you start out on your map, it’s best to scan around for possible multi-combination. It’d be unwise to combine things as you see they are. Just pay some attention, and the result will be enjoyable. If you’re feeling extra tactical, you can try to aim for the biggest, most challenging set of combination. This is, of course, time-consuming, but it’s a joyful thing to watch.
Don’t use all the special blocks right away
They’re beautiful to activate, but the game has a mechanism to reward you for unused empowered tiles. At the end of the level, every individual block that you didn’t break will turn into coins. Coins are absolutely necessary, so you should consider carefully upon matching the empowered blocks. Anyway, if you’re lucky enough to combine two upgraded blocks, they’ll turn into something even more powerful. In many cases, that saves a lot of moves, and it looks extra appealing as well.
Start from the bottom
The trick is not to go for the easy matches on the top of your map. You should try to find combinations at the bottom of the board. This strategy doesn’t necessarily need to work with every round, but it’s a good thing to have in mind. Creating matches on the board bottom can trigger a chain effect. There’s a chance that falling blocks will keep combining on their own, so that saves extra time and effort.

The final verdict
All in all, I’d give this game a 7/10. It has a decent storyline, hard puzzles, and excellent graphics. One thing I don’t like much is that some rounds are very tough. It’s time-consuming, to be honest. The overall game is still pleasant. Manor Cafe is free to download, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s interested in a new puzzle solver and building simulator.
